SEED SAVING WORKSHOP

with Amirah Mitchell of Sistah Seeds

Saturday, September 28th from 11am-3pm

Lunch provided | Rain or shine

Registration cost: $20

 The Seed Farm

5854 Vera Cruz Road, Emmaus

Learn the basics of saving seeds on the farm in this half-day practicum with Amirah Mitchell of Sistah Seeds. We’ll start in the field by learning how to determine when a crop is ready to save seeds and will then help bring in the harvest. After lunch, participants will learn both wet and dry seed processing methods on the crops harvested that morning. Equipment highlights include millet wet seed separator, DIY zig zag aspirator, and additional processing methods. Participants will gain a sense of what seed saving can look like for a small-scale farm and will get hands-on experience with seed crops. Bring your questions!

Amirah Mitchell is a farmer, seedkeeper and community educator who has worked in agriculture and food justice since 2007. She holds a B.S. in Horticulure from Temple University, studied agriculture in Brazil and Panama, and has farmed in Massachusetts, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Farmers depend on their bodies to get the work done. When an injury can derail the entire growing season, it’s important to start with healthy strategies to protect our bodies, including backs, knees, wrists, hips, and shoulders. The Farmer Movement Workshop covers BETTER body mechanics and movement patterns in order to decrease injury potential, increase efficiency, and extend career longevity.

Topics covered include:

  • Overall health related to personal well-being

  • Movement practice of four high use movement patterns: hinge, squat, push, and pull

  • Discussion of kneeling patterns, rotation, and core stability.

We’ll have a Q&A session, and each participant will leave with tips to improve their overall movement health and wellness.
